What a Raga Is, Gently Explained

राग (raga) is often translated simply as melody, but the word carries considerably more than that. A raga is a framework of notes, movement and mood, something a musician inhabits and explores rather than a fixed tune to be played the same way every single time.
Each raga has its own particular character: certain notes emphasised, certain phrases favoured, certain moods it naturally tends toward. Two very different musicians can perform the same raga and produce genuinely different music, yet a trained ear will still recognise the underlying raga beneath both performances.
For a beginner, it helps to think of a raga less like sheet music and more like a mood carefully built from sound. You are not simply hearing notes in sequence; you are hearing a particular emotional and musical world being patiently constructed in real time. That patient, sound built world is part of what makes raga such a rewarding subject for a lifetime of listening.
