Aroha and Avaroha: Ascending and Descending Movement

आरोह (aroha) describes a राग (raga)'s ascending movement through its notes, while अवरोह (avaroh) describes its descending movement back down. These two patterns are rarely identical, and a raga is often defined as much by this asymmetry as by the specific notes it actually uses.
A raga might skip certain notes on the way up while including them freely on the way down, or favour entirely different phrases in each direction. This asymmetry gives each raga a distinct, recognisable shape, something closer to a particular walking pattern than a simple straight line of notes.
Listening for this rise and fall, even without naming it technically, is a useful way into raga appreciation. Notice how the music climbs and settles, and you are already tracing the very shape a raga was built around from the start. Even a listener with no formal training can begin to sense this shape after only a handful of attentive, patient listens.
