Within every राग (raga), one note tends to carry particular importance: वादी (vadi), the most emphasised note, around which the raga's character seems to organise itself. A second note, संवादी (samvadi), supports it closely, appearing frequently and reinforcing the raga's overall emotional centre. Together these two notes act almost like a compass, quietly orienting the listener throughout an otherwise wide ranging performance.

These two notes function almost like gravitational points within the raga's structure. A skilled musician returns to them often, using them to anchor improvisation and to remind the listener, even amid considerable ornamentation, exactly which raga is currently being explored throughout the performance. Even brief improvisation tends to circle back toward them, as though the raga itself were gently reminding the listener where it stands.

For a listener, noticing which note a performance keeps quietly returning to can offer a useful clue toward the raga's identity, even without any formal training. That returning note is very often doing far more structural work than it might initially seem to. Learning to listen for this returning note is one of the simplest ways to begin recognising ragas by ear alone.
