Where a Western melody is often understood mainly as a sequence of notes, राग (raga) is understood first as a mood, a particular emotional atmosphere the musician is responsible for building and sustaining across an entire performance, not simply a tune to be repeated exactly.

This is why the same raga can be expressed through many different compositions and still feel recognisably consistent. The specific notes played may vary considerably from performance to performance, but the underlying mood, once established, tends to remain remarkably stable throughout. A raga heard on one instrument and later on a very different one can still feel unmistakably like the same underlying world.

Listening for mood rather than melody alone can genuinely change how a raga is experienced. Rather than asking what tune is being played, it helps far more to simply ask what feeling the music seems to be gently, patiently building toward. That question, asked patiently and repeatedly, is often the surest way into raga appreciation for a genuine beginner.
