Listening to ग़ज़ल or क़व्वाली alone in quiet, undistracted silence offers one kind of experience, close attention to individual detail, while listening within a gathered mehfil offers something quite different: shared, communal feeling built together. Both experiences are genuinely worth having; neither fully substitutes for the other's particular pleasures.
Neither approach is inherently superior; each reveals different qualities within the same music. Solitary listening sharpens close attention, while communal listening reveals how much of this tradition was always built for shared, collective experience. Alternating deliberately between the two approaches often gives the fullest possible picture of a single piece.
Trying both approaches deliberately, the same piece heard alone and then again in company, offers a genuinely useful way to appreciate just how much a listening context actually shapes the experience itself.
