A second listen to the same ग़ज़ल or राग performance rarely feels identical to the first, since familiarity frees attention from simply following what happens next, allowing it to notice detail, nuance and craft missed the first time through. This is one of the clearest, most reliable signs that a piece genuinely rewards repeated attention.

This is part of why repeated listening is so strongly encouraged within the wider tradition, a single hearing offering only a first, necessarily partial impression of a piece built for sustained, patient, repeated attention over time. Treating a first listen as merely an introduction, not a full encounter, sets the right expectations from the start.

Deliberately returning to a favourite piece several times, rather than always seeking something new, often deepens appreciation considerably more than a wide but shallow survey across many different, only briefly heard performances ever could. Many longtime listeners credit this exact habit with deepening their appreciation more than anything else they tried.
