Why a Qawwali Can Outlast an Ordinary Song

Where a typical song might last a few minutes, a single क़व्वाली (qawwali) can easily unfold across half an hour or considerably longer, built not from a fixed, unchanging arrangement but from a living structure that expands and contracts in response to the room around it.
This length is not filler or indulgence for its own sake. It reflects qawwali's core purpose as a vehicle for सामा (sama), structured spiritual listening, where the gradual build toward intensity matters far more than reaching a tidy, predictable ending within a set number of minutes.
A skilled qawwal reads the audience continuously, extending a phrase that is clearly landing and moving briskly past one that is not. The performance's true length, in this sense, is decided collectively in the room, not fixed in advance by anyone. No fixed clock governs when a qawwali should end; the room itself decides, phrase by phrase, how far the evening travels.
