That seriousness is easy to underestimate from outside the tradition, where music is more often treated as mere leisure.
Recognising music's intended role this way reframes how devotional performance might best be approached, not as passive entertainment to be casually consumed but as an invitation toward a considerably deeper, more demanding kind of attention. Accepting that invitation fully is, in many respects, the entire point of attending a devotional performance at all.
