इश्क़ (ishq), love, occupies a central place within Sufi thought, understood not merely as an emotion but as an active path, a discipline of longing and devotion capable of drawing the seeker steadily toward the divine. This active understanding of love sets Sufi thought apart from readings that treat love as purely passive feeling.
This understanding of love as a spiritual method, rather than simply a feeling, shapes much of the imagery found throughout ghazal and qawwali, where romantic language is regularly understood to carry deeper, spiritual weight beneath its surface. That deeper weight is easy to miss without at least some familiarity with this underlying Sufi framework.
Approaching ishq as a discipline rather than a passive state helps explain why Sufi poetry treats longing with such patience and seriousness, love understood as demanding, effortful work rather than simply something that happens to a person. That seriousness of purpose distinguishes Sufi ishq from more casual, purely romantic understandings of love found elsewhere.
