Accompaniment within ग़ज़ल singing has shifted considerably over generations, moving from sarangi led ensembles toward harmonium centred arrangements, and more recently toward larger orchestral setups that blend traditional and newer instruments within a single performance. Each generation of performers has left its own particular mark on how a ghazal evening is typically arranged and heard.
Each shift reflected practical realities as much as artistic preference, changing training patterns, changing performance venues and changing audience expectations all shaping which instruments musicians reached for when accompanying a singer through an evening of ghazal. None of these shifts happened suddenly; each unfolded gradually across many years of quiet, practical adjustment.
Tracing this evolution reveals a tradition genuinely willing to adapt its accompaniment over time, provided the underlying priority, close, attentive support for the sung word, remained fundamentally unchanged beneath whatever instruments happened to be chosen. That underlying priority has proven remarkably durable, surviving every change in fashion, technology and available instrumentation.
