Unlike many Western musical traditions built around shifting chordal harmony, much of the wider राग based tradition favours a sustained drone, provided by तानपुरा or सुर पेटी, against which a single melodic line unfolds and develops. This choice reflects a very different underlying philosophy about what a listener's attention should actually be doing.
This preference for drone over harmony shapes how melody itself is experienced, every note understood in careful relation to a single fixed pitch rather than moving through a changing harmonic landscape, producing a very different, more focused kind of musical attention. That single fixed reference point becomes, over time, almost as important to the ear as the melody itself.
