The Tanpura's Drone Beneath a Raga Performance

तानपुरा (tanpura) provides the continuous, unchanging drone that underlies most राग (raga) performances, its steady tone offering a fixed reference point against which every other note in the performance can be tuned, measured and understood by ear. Its unbroken presence throughout an entire performance gives every other sound something stable to be measured against, without ever calling attention to itself.
Though it rarely draws direct attention to itself, the tanpura's presence shapes the entire performance. Without its steady drone, the subtle bends and slides central to raga singing would lose much of their meaning, since there would be no fixed point against which to measure their movement.
Listening specifically for the tanpura, rather than past it, can be a rewarding exercise for a newcomer. Once you notice its steady hum, the melodic movement happening above it becomes considerably easier to follow and appreciate. Many experienced listeners describe this shift in attention as one of the more rewarding small discoveries in raga listening.
