Many older cities across the region developed a particular tradition of courtyard महफ़िल, gatherings held within the open, sheltered space at a home's centre, shaded from the street yet still open to evening sky and air. That sheltered openness gave every courtyard gathering its own particular, memorable character and feeling.
These courtyard settings shaped the mehfil's particular acoustic character, sound gathering and lingering within an enclosed but unroofed space, neither fully outdoors nor fully contained, lending performances a distinctive, softly resonant quality. Musicians who performed regularly in such courtyards often spoke of missing that particular, softly resonant acoustic elsewhere.
Though modern housing has made true courtyard settings considerably rarer, their memory continues to shape how the tradition imagines its ideal setting, intimate, sheltered, open to the sky above. Some hosts today still go to real lengths to recreate something close to that original courtyard feeling, right down to the lighting.
