Listening for Call and Response in Qawwali

Much of क़व्वाली's structure depends on सवाल जवाब, call and response, between lead voice and chorus, and learning to track this exchange deliberately offers a particularly useful entry point for a newcomer to the tradition. This exchange is usually easy to hear even before any other structural element becomes clear to a new listener.
Try following a single phrase as the lead singer offers it, then notice exactly how and when the chorus responds, echoing, extending or slightly varying what has just been sung, before the cycle begins again. Doing this deliberately even once trains the ear to catch this pattern automatically in future performances.
Once this pattern becomes easy to hear, the qawwali's larger structure, its gradual build through repeated exchange, becomes considerably clearer, transforming what might first sound chaotic into something recognisably deliberate and shaped. That clarity, once gained, rarely disappears, changing how every subsequent qawwali performance is heard afterward.
