दाद (daad) is not a single fixed phrase but a whole small vocabulary of spoken appreciation offered during a महफ़िल, phrases like वाह वाह (wah wah) or क्या बात है (kya baat hai) offered spontaneously when a couplet lands with real force. Learning to recognise these phrases is often a newcomer's first genuine step into full participation.

Each phrase carries a slightly different weight and register, some more restrained, others more exuberant, and skilled listeners learn to choose their response carefully, matching daad's intensity to the specific couplet that has just moved them. Overusing the most exuberant phrases too often can, in fact, dilute their intended impact considerably.

Learning even a handful of these phrases can transform how a newcomer experiences a mehfil, moving from silent, uncertain observation toward genuine, active participation in the evening's unfolding, shared exchange. That small shift, from silent observer to active participant, often changes how the entire evening feels.
