बंदिश (bandish) refers to a fixed, composed piece set within a particular राग (raga) and rhythmic cycle, offering a stable structure around which a performer can then build extensive improvisation, the bandish acting as an anchor point across an entire performance. Without this fixed centre, an otherwise expansive raga performance could easily lose its sense of shared, recognisable direction.
Where alap and later improvisation explore a raga freely, the bandish provides fixed words and a fixed melodic shape that returns predictably throughout a performance, giving both performer and listener a shared, recognisable point to return to amid extended musical exploration. A listener familiar with the bandish can always tell exactly where a performance currently stands within its larger structure.
